The red stuff on most/all K&N filters is actually oil.. it helps to keep the water from actually getting IN to the filter.. i've been caught in the rain plenty of times with it exposed, never had a single problem

don't worry about riding in the rain with a exposed filter, unless of course you're trying to cross a river.. lol..
i'v ridden in the rain a good bit at highway speeds and never a problem.. if you generally ride easy and don't get on it much, if anything the slight amount of moisture getting sucked in will do some good by blowing carbon off the piston and valves.
I've not heard of anybody having any problems in the rain with an exposed filter, including myself. There are plenty of aftermarket items to keep the rain out of exposed filters, anyway - rain socks, etc...
