I bought two new HJC 3/4 face when we got the Heritage in 07

At the dealer the large fit me good and sht small fit the wife..

Not having to wear one all the time here in IND, I seldom do, but I noticed that I got a lot of buffering when I wore my LARGE size one..

Last summer after 5ys of having them I went on a 5day riding vacation, I Didn't like the Mushroom head look and I tried the Wife's Small helmet on.

Supprise.... it is snug but it still fit, So I tired riding with it for a couple Hrs and no hot spots.

The best thing I liked about her helmet is its (1.) Smaller in Phy size, (2) tighter, but not too tight. (3) it done away with All the WIND Buffering..

Did I like it,,, well it worked out great on the 5 day trip, but still a little MUSHROOMY.

POINT is, in my own opinion, most of the buffering that we get could be done away with, with a tighter fitting Helmet. just me.????

Still,, I am planning on getting one of these. As I like most riders, don't like the MUSHROOM head look..

Bell Coutom 500.
NovDot.
RockHards...

I've seen the 1/2 carbon lids and IMO there just not for me.. Don't like the look.

Will have to say the I do like the look of Ur side view of Ur Rock lid.

For sure, its not a mushroom.

the rockhard is not too big looking. Its funny because if you look in a mirror, it looks a bit mushroomy, but not too much at all in pics. The liner is real soft, the key is getting it down tight enough that it sits just above your brow line. It doesn't get much wind buffeting at all, just if you don't tighten it enough, which is to be expected. It does quiet everything down a lot. When we rode to CO, I wore my helmet the whole time on the Interstates, but scooting around Colorado Springs I wore a ballcap. I had forgotten how loud my bike is.

So, what's the smallest profile 3/4 dot helm people have found? I've got a narrow head and every single thing I try on looks like a deep-sea diving helmet...

I have to admit guys that I have little to no experiance with helmets!! I don't even know what you guys are talking about when you mention the "mushroom" look, hot spots and buffeting!! I am going to be buy a helmet one of these days because I plan on traveling outside of the area I am always in that does not require a helmet! Could you guys explain yourselves? I guess I can figure out the "mushroom" look but what is this "hot spot" thing you guys are talking about? I can't imagine sinking this kind of money into a helmet and then hating it! I have ridden so long without a helemt, in fact, in nearly 35 years I have never even owned a helmet!! Might sound odd to allot of you guys but it's the truth!! I hate em! I can't see or hear as well with them on.

You wont find "the perfect helmet" for you without trying some on... Everyones head, neck and shoulders for that matter are shaped differently. What gives one man the bobble head look may look great on the next guy. A helmet that fits a guy on this forum's head perfectly, might not fit the next guys head nearly as well. The truth is that you may end up buying a helmet online that you may get lucky and be satisfied with, but you wont really know how well it fits until you try a few more helmets on.

For example: My head is a size large and although most large sized helmets fit me in the width category, I have a tough time finding one that fits well from front to back. Many large helmets put too much pressure on my forehead. My Shoei RF1000 helmets fit perfectly but are size XL.

You've got to try them on. Use this forum to discuss quality, features, etc. Then make trips to local places to try them on and if you cant do that, buy a few helmets, keep the one you like and send the rest back.

Mushroom Look (aka Bobble Head,Astronaut,Marvin the Martian etc) = A helmet that looks just huge on your head. It is a very high profile and looks silly to most people. We are all seeking a lo profile DOT helmet (one that fits close to the head and is not to high while still meeting DOT standards.

Hot Spot=A certain point that a helmet fits a little tight around your head. It is usually right in the front around your fore head. This usually goes away when the foam breaks in a little. It creates pressure, tightness in that certain spot (making it feel hot). Ex: When you take off a helmet and you have a big red mark on the top of your fore head.

Buffeting = Noise inside the helmet. Due to a lack of a good seal around the face of the helmet. Or the foam of the ear pads too thin. Letting air inside the helmet creating a buffeting noise. Ex: Kind of like when you are ridding in a car and all the windows are closed except one of the back ones. It gives you that wo,wo,wo,wo,wo, sound.

These are the definitions IMO.But could differ a little from person to person. Hope this helps.

My newest helmet by the way is a Biltwell Hustler and luckily, it fits me better than the rest of my helmets. Bobblehead? Unfortunately most people would probably say that this helmet does give me that look but it isnt nearly as bad as my HD brand half helmet. But I'll take all of that extra protection over less protection that novelty type helmets provide and an expensive ticket or two any day...
