I have a chance to grab a complete top end off a 2009 Twin Cam for 400.00 with 1200 miles (a good friends).
A machinist is telling its not worth grabbing it, that I should go with an S&S 95" bolt on kit For 700.00.What is my gain if I just bolt the 96"factory stuff(everything except pistons)on??? (no machining)
I plan on doing Twin cam conversion kit with either a 37N or SE254 cams.
Got the SERT , SE AC and Big Gun 3 Rip saw exhaust already on it.
Dyno map is currently 86.52 at 5800rpm and peak torque is currently 85.41 at 4200rpms.
Bottom line should I buy the 2009 top end???
Thanks
The cyls are the same size as an 88. If you were to have them bored and have the heads done then it would work out for you, the '06 and '09 heads are about the same if I remember right. I got a set of '06 castings for mine and had them done when I did my motor over last year. The cams won't help you any either, the best place for those is the scrap bin

As already mentioned a 96 is a stroked 88. Pistons are same diameter and you aren't gaining anything. Unless your 88 is burning oil or high mile there isn't any point in swapping.
Now a 103 piston set would increase volume to 95 ci and would be worth doing but I don't see any plus side to spending money to get the same ad you already have.
Up to you,it's your money. I have a pair of se255s if you want to put those in instead of stockers. Pm me
No that was my theory, score the second set of items and get them bored/machined to the larger pistons.( Heads done to what ever I need to accomodate pistons and cams.) So Then my bike won't be down all that longand I have back up parts.

Doing the whole Cam Conversion thing being an 06 so cams are a given.
Thinking of running the Andrews 37N, was told by Gary @Andrews it will be fine both before AND after heads and Jugs are done (Any thoughts?). Not a speed freak but you never know when you might have to Haul a Fat Chick. So Low to Midrange Cam is my guess?
Thanks
