Default uh oh... whats wrong now??

hi everyone. i bought a 2001 fatboy a few months ago with 1200 miles on it. so its basically brand new. it was stock except for the stage 1 upload and the SE air filter kit. yesterday i put on new bars, riser, grips, mirrors.... now after 10 mins of riding my hands and wrists are so numb i almost have to pull over. and yup, everything is tight.

the bars are 36" wide chubby's by wild1.
theyre on a new 4 1/2" riser and the grips are harley davidson.

nothing is loose or rattling and as a matter of fact we made sure to seriously tighten every nut and bolt. any thoughts would be appreciated.... this is killing me!

If the bars are higher than the old ones , you could have a circulation problem in your arms or you're just getting old like me!

I remember in the beginning of my riding season that my finger tips would get numb and there were a few times that I would have to stop, Have not noticed any thing like this lately, so it must be something that your hands just need to get used to.

C'mon buddy get a grip!!! No, seriously... that may be exactly your problem! I had bought some slick looking chrome and black rubber grips and after the first couple of rides noticed that my forearms were killing me and my hands were going to sleep... It finally hit me and I bought some cushion grips and the problem went away... oh well, the first ones were on sale for $65 and I sold them to a sucker, um I mean fellow enthusiast for $20....

Do your new bars fit you and your riding position? Wide bars that put your hands wide and forward will cause all kinds of discomfort problems. A properly set up riding position should be a comfortable as your car.

Regards,

Bill

I have found that bars that "look cool" usually feel like crap! I have never had a problem when I use stock heritage bars. I have had them on two Road Kings, two Fatboys and of course both of my Heritages.

I spoke to a friend who is a hand Dr. about this very problem when I owned a Sportster. There are two factors. 1 - Grip pressure and 2- Wrist position. Draw a line from the outside of your thumb down your wrist. When you are in position on your bike, see if the line is straight. If it isn't you will have problems. Change the bars until your wrist/hand is in line. You also don't want your wrist to be twisted to the outside. After I went therough this with my Sportster, I have been very careful not to have this same issue with my Heritage. Numb thumb is no fun...... I also changed to ISO grips to help the grip pressure issue. Hope this helps. Doc
