Default "Newbie" looking at a '12 Deluxe and SE Stage 1

Hey guys looking at getting my second motorcycle and my first Harley. I've been to the dealer about 15 times drooling and I'm pretty set on the Deluxe. From shopping around it seems that I can get a new '12 with the TC103 and six speed, for $17,884 OTD 2k under MSRP(19,995) it is two tone(Birch/Midnight) with ABS/Security package, this is about $455 more than a distant dealer can get me the same bike, but my local dealer said they will throw me a bone on accessories and I want to stay local.

The cheapest used Deluxe(96inch Six Speed) I can find is an 2011, but no ABS for $15,995 and it has 2,000 miles on it, bone stock.

The dealer that has the new one, also has a 06(88inch 5 speed) for $15,400 with 11,000 miles, and it has V&H pipes but thats it.

Does the deal on the 2012 seem reasonable? Really good? or is this common now days?

Also I would like to get a screaming eagle stage one kit, but can't seem to locate them online. Are these build your self? What would one expect to pay for the pipes/ecm tune/aircleaner? I like the Vance and Hines Big Shots Staggered.

If it were me, I would go with the new one. There really isn't that much price difference. Are you financing it? You can get the longest term, best interest rate through harley on the new one. If your financing, you might even have a smaller payment by buying new.

As far as the stage 1 goes...I would stay away from most of the screaming eagle stuff. It's over priced and the pipes suck in my opinion. Your pocket book will determine the way you go but I'll throw one senerio out:

I've found some of the best prices at: directharlyeparts.com

Vance and hines pipes: around 500 (499 for vance and hines big shots at harley direct delivered to your door)
Arlen ness big sucker: 100+ new on e-bay
TTS tuner: 340 (harley direct)
dyno tune: 300 (research the dyno operator real well)

Total about 1300. (1500 total if you have someone put all the stuff on) and the bike will run cooler and you will notice a big performance difference.

Thanks Rooti!

Is the TTS tuner required if it get it dyno tuned? I'm used to cars and there are 'canned' tunes or dyno tunes, but most dyno tuners have the hardware to flash the ECM.

Welcome to the site. You are going to get about as many different opinions as there are posters. I haven't really looked at anything for awhile, but your deal doesn't sound too bad to me. Anytime they are coming off MRSP is pretty good. I have had a security system before and never used it, but ABS would be something that interests me since I don't have that. I would press on with the '12 model. The Stg I is essentially an high flow breather and decent pipes. The breather kit is a little over 100 bucks last time I looked. The V&H will fill the bill for pipes. A flash from the dealer will cost around a 150 bucks, but do some research on whether that is even necessary anymore. A lot of people will say get a tuner and a dyno ($700+), the dealer may tell you it needs a flash, and some people will say the last couple of years the ECUs are smart enough to adjust to some basic changes like pipes and a breather. It's tough to find someone who really knows and you can trust when it comes to the ECU. I can tell you a lot of folks with strong opinions haven't kept up with the times--so good luck with that one. The Deluxe is a great bike, get it, ride it, learn it before you go crazy changing it all up. It will run well right out the door and it won't disappoint.

That's about right pricing. It should be about 10-15% of msrp.

Skip the flash and just buy a tuner with the money.

you've got them hooked now. Tell them to throw in a stage 1 upgrade or you'll head down the road and save $500 and put toward the stage 1

Sounds like a deal to me, if you can get the stage 1 thrown in that would be a big plus, but pipes and an AC may run over a grand. A good set of Vance and Hines can run over $500 alone.

Welcome to the forum from Nashville TN!

Thanks for all the reply's!

So maybe a windshield would be a better place to start and get the performance stuff later.

Any other "must haves" for a NEWB? Maybe something that I wont notice until I ride for 500 miles and say "I wish I had..."

I take the Basic riders course on the 10th and then test ride the bike before taking it home.

How quiet are the stock pipes on the 103's?

only you will be able to anser those questions. When I first bought my 2011 dyna I went with slip ons and XEID's (check nightrider.com) This will give you the sound and the XEID's are a simple plug in resistor that fools your ECM into putting out more fuel. They are only 100 bucks and they are great for cooling down the motor which you will find is real hot.

The problem with going cheep is that after you have the bike awhile you want the best stuff on it and you end up spending more money because you already spent money on the cheep stuff.

There are different types of tuners...pigtail ones that stay attached to the bike and ones that reflash your ECM. The TTS use to make the screamin eagle tuner and then went with their own brand. It reflashes the ECM. You don't have to have it dyno tuned...you can do it yourself with a laptop but for me if I'm going to spend that much money, I'm going to have it dialed in...and I have a well known tuner 15 miles from my house. I take it there one day, and then just ride.

If you want to go with one thats attached to the bike Jamie at fuelmoto has their own brand of powercommander and will preload it with a canned map that will be close to what mods you have had done. Either way would be better then the harley download. Hell I would choose the XEID's over the harley download.

Good luck in your searches, it never ends....

The stock pipes will be quieter then your car....I had to leave my bike for the pipes.

That price on the new '12 sounds good to me. It's about a grand less than I see the same bike going for in my area. You're getting brand new with the full warranty, ABS/security, the 103 CI motor and 6 speed...plus $400+ in accessories? I say go for it. You'll love the Deluxe! Post pics when you can

Before you pull the trigger, take a look on eBay for comparison. There can be some very tasty buys on lightly used late model Harleys, some with nice accessories and even transferable warranty. Obviously you need to do your homework and the process may take some time but it paid off for me and some others on this forum. I'm just making you aware of some dealer alternatives.
