Default Footpeg Socket Head Screw Question

Had to remove the right passenger foot peg on the wife's bike, screwed up the head and need to replace it. Because she has teh Softail Rear Saddlebag Guards on it according to the instruction list the replacement screw is Harley PN 4209 (Screw, socket head, 2-3/4 inch). The listing inside the instructions says 3/8-16 for thread.

The dealer says they don't have any of these, and apparently their feeder depot (Toronto) doesn't have any either.

Local jobber has the screw, but it is a Grade 2. The original that came off is marked as a Grade 8.

Anyone know where I can get the original or alternatively if the Grade 2 is adequate for the purpose?

Thanks.

When I put a tool box on the side of my bike I needed a longer bolt. Just went to the hardware store and bought one. Works fine.

I believe you can get grade 8 socket heads at Lowes.

I can get them on line at Fastenal but they don't indicate they are a Grade 8, they are a Grade 2 - my understanding is that Grade 8 is the strongest? Is that grade necessary?

Thanks for the Lowes reference, they are more of a US company and we don't have one anywhere near us so that doesn't work.

grade 8 is the strongest and theres a lot of weight and pressure bein put on footpegs. i wouldn't use a grade 2 bolt. lowes or any ace hardware store will have what ya need.

Thanks guys, much to my surprise there is a Lowes in New Westminster, quick half hour drive, checked them out, they had exactly what I needed. Now why isn't my HD dealer as well stocked?

Anyway, problem solved, thanks for the help.
