I am wondering if anyone eles has experienced the same problem. After riding a few 100 miles or its an extremely hot day - it only takes a few mikes, especially during the summer months, I am unable to shift into netural with the bike running, once I shut the bike off, I can shift into netural. The clutch has been adjusted to "factory" specifications, however the problem still plagues me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Usually, hard shifting into neutral means that either the clutch or clutch cable are out of adjustment. I know you said the clutch was adjusted, but you might need to have it looked at again
I believe some on here have had a similar problem and the went to Amsoil if i remember or some brand of lighter oil. You may want to do a search and find the exact thread.
If you are mechanically inclined, take the shifter off of the shaft, pull the
shaft out of the mount, put some oil on the shaft. Harleys' grease isn't
much and the factory stuff seems to gum up more as it gets hot.
Make sure the shaft works back and forth easily. You may even take some
emery cloth and rub the shaft to clean any residue off of it before reinstalling
it. My '10 FXDWG was hard to shift into neutral until I did this. Now, it
works great!!!
Was changing oil in my '11 FXDB last nite and since I had the shifter loose, I did
this to the shifter since it was hard to find neutral. When I rode it today, it worked
like it should.
You can't just squirt oil in where the shaft slides through the mount, it has O-rings
in between the inner lever and outer lever, it has to be disassembled.
If all seems tight U just might try some oil at the shift linkage points and where the shaft goes into Ur foot shifter also before tearing her all down.
Even if thats not it, U need to oil those points anyway if U havent.
My bike did that one time....pulling up to the service Bay at the HD dealership......kind of embarrassing! Not sure what caused it, but it's never done it again. The guys said that "neutral" is a tempermental gear in Harleys and may not indicate any problem at all.
