I'm new to this forum, I just purchased a softail- Fatboy 2005, just over 11K miles, I'm excited and want to know what I should expect as far as problems with this ride?
Is this generally a problem free year/bike?
I need to learn a lot, like when to change oil, what type of oil.
What to do about filling up as I'm from west Michigan and there are no gas stations that don't have ethynol in the fuel, is there an additive I should use? Are you using premium all the time anyway?
i used to have a 2005 FLSTFI - Annv Model. It was a great bike. No problems for that year that I encountered. There was a recall for ID or safety sticker on the frames and they sent out replacement stickers and I believe some early 05 had a valve seal problem and were using a little oil. Mine did not and never needed anything.
The only thing in my opinion is at or around 20,000 check the cam chain tensioners for wear and replacement. If they need it and your going to keep the bike Id upgrade to the SE Hyd Tensioners and probably replace the cams for performance.
Other than that basic maintenance, oil changes at 5,000 , the MOCO says the trans and primary dont need to be changed that often but i always change all 3 holes at the same time.
Any premium fuel is OK, I like Redline Syn Oils but any premium oil and gear box stuff is good.
Congratulations and welcome! I haven't had my 05 Fat Boy very long so can't tell you what to expect other than smiles when you ride it!
Same as any other bike for maintenance! Change fluids at 5k,change the brake pads when needed and keep good rubber on it!
We all have opinions on what fluids are best! I've used Amsoil syn and never had a problem! Post some pics of your new ride when you get a chance!
Here's a couple of shots, I've ordered a new seat so far. I'll post the difference in seats when I put the new one on.
I'm thinking about bags, got any suggestions?
I looked at changing the rear tire to a bigger size, but it looks like the cost is nearly 4K. I think that I'll wait a couple of years before I think about that change again.
