Default Sporty tank on a Softail

Two questions:

1. Does anyone know if the sportster backbone is the same diameter as the softail frames?

2. Is the sporty fuel pump adequate for the twin-cam motor? I know the pressure is fine, but I can't find flow rates anywhere for either pump.

I ask because I'm considering putting a 4-gallon tank on my crossbones. Yes, I get about 10mpg less so I'll suffer some range, but I'm curious to see how it'll look. The issue is that the sportster tanks use a different fuel pump arrangement, so I can't use my stock pump on the new tank. If the sportster pump works, I'd give it a shot.

UPDATE: Got a tank - test-fit photos on page 3!

I assume you mean the smaller peanut style tank and not the 4.5 gallon XL tank?

You could probably modify one to fit but it would be a lot of work. You also have to find a place for ignition/speedo/etc. A easier option would be to look for an aftermarket peanut tank made for softails. You can probably find one that would bolt right up. Lots of options out there for carbed bikes I know. Might be harder finding one that's FI though. Good luck!

Either tank would work, the 4.5 gallon might actually look more proportional. I'll need to relocate the speedo and ignition, but I can make a bracket for that. Roland Sands makes a kit but it's around 1500 bucks with the fuel pump.

This thread has a few softails with XL tanks on them. It'll at least show you what it could look like.

Contact Cory at Main Drive Cycles. He makes sporty type tanks with modified sportster fuel pumps to fit on the Softail.

Look into the custom chrome Lucky F*cker. Price is right. You can find them on EBay. They make the whole kit like RSD but without the hefty price tag. I waited for the 200 fender but I pulled the trigger on the Shadetree before they released it.
