So, this morning, I got a bunch of clicks of the solenoid when I tried to start my bike. I got it to crank a few times, but only for less than a second or two.
Now I get nothing. Is it the solenoid that goes most often? When the starter motor enagaged and I got crank, it cranked strong. I'm thinking it's the internal circuit that sends power through the solenoid to the motor.
On these solenoid buttons, are you actually pushing the starter pinion into the flywheel?
Bad contacts on the solenoid, a push button would not have fixed it, but I will put one on to prevent the other issues from stranding me.
Here's a pic of the inner guts. The plunger thats actuated by the solenoid is not pictured, but the contacts are the copper bits that the power posts are hooked to. The right side one was very worn down.
Here's a pic of the new contacts next to the old ones. A small local rebuilder had the contacts, and cleaned up the pitting on the plunger for me. $15 fix.
Google Denso solenoid repair kit. There are Youtube videos and websites selling the parts. You can get a new plunger and contact kit for $30. Fleabay had a few as well. Nice to be able to fix it with $15 in parts vs. $329 at the dealer.
how about those lever ( gear shifter looking) ones.. I am eyeing it. any feedback? Would I still use the relay on the other side? (67). what about just thge best regular one? any opinions?
I have a 1995 heritage Softail classic in mint condition. I have the dreaded click. For the time being I had my mechanic order me a solenoid push button. He ordered me one with a long bolt with a black *** on it. When I installed it the bolt head was starting to push on the plunger before it was flush with solenoid housing. I got it bolted on pushed it with ignition off it turned over. I then turned on the ignition and fired it up. The starter stayed ingaged and was making a grinding noise. This is where I need advise. Should I cut some of the bolt head off till it just touches the plunger when installed? Anyone have this problem?
