I had an 03 Anniv NT.... put the +6 +2 bars and risers and STC seat and it flat out handled PERFECT, I am 250# and I could make that bike do anything with just an *** twitch, wish I never sold it.... awesome, awesome bike... the later big rear tire hurt handling IMO
Ha! I run the stock drags on 7" risers (1" over) and have done 500 mile days without a problem. I guess you have to be a long armed goon like me lol!
I have never understood why so many guys complain about the stock bars, I love em. When I was gonna buy a new bike in 06 I was torn between the train and a Softail Standard. I got the Standard and put mini apes on it. I love the bike but the wind beats me to death and I had to put a windvest on it. I have 5 seats for it and all of them make my lower back hurt and give me butt burn. My shoulders hurt after an hour on it.
In 2008 I came across a smokin deal on an 04 train that had 1500 miles on it. Totally stock and looked like it just came off the showroom floor. I couldn"t pass it up. I figured I would have to change out the bars and seat but to my surprise it fit me perfectly. it still has the stock bars and badlander seat on it and it is the most comfortable and best handling bike I have ever ridden. I can do 500 in a day on it with no problem other that just being tired. I am 5 11 so it is not like I have extra long arms or anything. The thing about the train is it does have a different seating position and it takes a little bit of getting used to. For me it takes the strain off my lower back and kind of stretches my back and shoulders out. The stock seat is very comfortable which was another surprise. Something else I noticed is I don't get nearly as much wind buffeting and I think it is because the risers and the bars block the wind.
I moved the bars forward on my standard to duplicate the stretch of the train and it was a big improvement. But I mostly ride my train. Also, the train is carbed and the standard is FI. The idle on the standard drives me crazy, it sounds like a choke is on at stoplights. They both run great but, I gotta special love for my train.
