So I need to replace my battery in my 2003 FXSTBI (Nightrain). I called harley and they said OEM replacement battery. $129.99. Seems a bit high, then again we are dealing with harley here. I said, can I get a generic battery some where else. He said,"Sure if you want to replace it again in 6 months"
Souns like BS to me. What do you guys think, can I go cheaper and keep it for a few years? Or is 129.99 about what these things cost?
You can find them a bit cheaper at some online retailers, or if you have a local battery warehouse, but they'll usually run around 100 to 120. I just use the HD battery, lasts about five years. If I were to save 20 bucks on the cost, that works out to $4 a year savings. IMO, not worth it to me to try out different brands. I know what to expect from the HD battery, and the dealer is convenient.
I got 7 years out of my original of Harley battery. I did not think that was to bad at all. So I had good luck with the original battery I went back with an oem Harley battery. I replaes mine 2 years ago and they were on $99 then. I talked with the parts guy at my local Harley store and he said that batteries and tires went up twice last year. Said touring batteries are about $180 now I believe.
This is the third battery thread in a week and it got me to thinking that now's the time to change mine.
Same battery from bike purchase in April '06 so that's 6 years. Battery has been fine but don't want to have it crap out in the middle of nowhere. Wife and I are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon later this year and we'd feel more comfortable with a new battery.
Priced a H-D battery at my local Indy and it was $129 so that is what I'm going with. As previously posted the price difference isn't worth going cheaper.
Check out Advance auto, they carry magna power batteries(made by deka) that have more cca than the hd battery and come with a 12 month replacement warranty. Go to advance auto online and check them out and if you want, pm me and I can hook you up with a discount code to knock off $35 the battery. Order it online enter the code and then pick it up in store. Quite a few of us run this battery in our dynas and have no problems. Money is better in your pocket than the moco's.

Not so sure about loyalty to a battery from the moco. I don't buy their oil nor filters and I would suspect that they just have companies make OEM products with their labels. Just a hunch.
My 04 still has the original battery that I keep on a battery tender when not riding. I also have a car with a 9 year old battery on a tender when not used, so needless to say I'm a strong believer in battery tenders...
I don't know the age of my battery - just got my bike at the end of last summer.
I'll see how it holds out this season and into fall to see if I should spring for a new one, just so 'I' know how old it'll be.
