I ride with the sock off and keep it in my bag. When I was it, I remove the filter entirely and just cover the hole with tape.
For those of you that keep the sock on and wash with it, you could get some rust on the tip of your filter. The previous owner of my bike left the sock on all the time and the chrome on the front rusted. I just purchased the $30 Skull stick on cap instead and that solved the problem for me.
I always run with sock off but I have the trim cover. I try to keep water off it. It's on a Fatboy lo and if felt like it was in my way at first.... Don't even notice it now. Used the sock a few times in heavy rain. I'm stage 1 with a V&H 2 into 1 pro pipe. It makes all the differance on my bike. Love the look!
I always loved the look but it took me a little while to get used to how far it sticks out. I can't use the foot rest on the right side of my mustache bar anymore, not that I really put my feet up on there very much. I've never put the sock on but it's in my jacket pocket, JIC. I use a plastic bag when I wash the bike. Seems like a popular method.
