Get a detachable windshield, that's what I got, when I go bar hopping I take the shield off. When I go on day plus trips I put the windshield on, it is def worth it on long trips, once you get where you are going, take it off and put it in the hotel room.
I took mine off for a day once. My neck was so stiff I had a skull cramp for 3 days after. Never again. I don't care what guys think of a windshield on my bike,I like it. Try taking a small stone off the cheek at 70 mph from a tractor trailer. You are gonna need crazy glue or stitches.
If a ride is less than 200 miles, I wouldn't even consider one. If you do decide to get one, the detachable is the way to go. You can plainly see my choice.
hmmmm......look cool? I didnt think I looked cool at all getting off my bike looking like the front of an 18 wheeler in the summer. I always had bug guts all over the front of me. I always use my windshield outside of town. I will admit I do take it off if I'm just tooling around town.
You gotta love a shield on the highway. I've got some large nicks in mine. Whatever caused them would have hit me in the face. I also like not feeling the constant 70mph wind pressure on me. I do love to ride without but not on the highway.
And anyone's blowing smoke if they say they prefer 70mph wind in their face rather than use a windshield.
Riding home from work today caught a nice bug splat on my hand and it reminded me how great spring is going to be behind a windshield.

I have a quick detach shield. Two years ago in late season I needed service and trailered to dealer. To trailer the bike I need to remove the shield. Well after picking the bike up after service I backed it off the trailer and rode not thinking about the shield. The Biggest thing I noticed immediately was the following:
1. WIND NOISE
Now I should say the reason I originally got the shield was to minimize fatique for long rides. I keep it on now all the time.
