Windshields are like tampons, every pu$$y has one.
So, it's about being a ***** or not. Check. Saw a guy the other day barreling down i-675 doing about 70 with no helm, no do-rag, no shield and I'm not sure he even had goggles on. I'm thinking *******, more than anything else. Long as it's about not being a *****, though, more power to him when he gets a june bug or stone crater in his mug.
They have a simple solution to people that don't want to get hit with anything and still own the road it's called the toyota Prius hahahahahahahaha. If you can handle a bug or a rock every now and then, don't ride dude.

I would recommend a detachable but only if you get the Chrome Fangs also
You have to have both to be effective
And It does work very well
Forgot about the fangs. Hate the windshield and the fangs. Swore the shield would only be for long trips. Stays on all the time now. Really swore the fangs were only for long trips. Yup, both stay on year around. What can I say, I'm a *****.
(But notice I'm cool in my sig. pic)

I was cool today as well and removed the shield and sissy bar. Realised I did't have any pics of the bike like this so, off we went for some shots. I really enjoyed it going around the neighborhood and down to the beach. Above 50 you really have to pay attention to what gear you're in because it's hard as hell to hear. I learned that to stay comfortable just lean into the wind . . . with a very determined look on your face.
Detachable windshield is the way to go on a Deluxe. I personally like the way the bike looks better without it and I usually ride with it off unless I'm going on long road trips. I actually think the bike rides better without it on as well since it makes a lot of drag and it's definitely noticeable.

Funny!
Another thing I realized this weekend: The wife and I (2 up) road out to Yellow Springs (about 30 minute ride each way with a lot of open road in between). Went without the windshield because it was hot. I was ok with the wind, but it about beat her to death, even being behind me.
