im going to be doing alot more riding this year and im already tired of getting hit with **** . should i put a shield on or not
Lots of companies out there making fairings also........easily removable. Most just use existing windshield mounts. Most fairing mfg's will color match the paint also.
I definitely see the advantages of having a windshield, but I'm not sure it'll look right on my bike. When the shields are removed, is the ugly looking mounting hardware still visible?
No, just the flat brackets and they're chrome so they blend right in to the front end.
When I got my Road King I figured that the first thing I would do is put the windshield into storage. To be fair about it I did a few highway and local trips without it and then with it. The only time it's been off since is when I wash it! It's a small PITA to keep clean, especially during a heavy bug swarm, but you gotta figure you'd be picking them outa your teeth otherwise!

I had one on my Dyna and could never get used to it. Looking through it was difficult for me, and the buffeting was annoying. I may give it another shot on the fatboy.

Just my opinion but I hate windshields. They have always been the first thing to come off of any bike I have ridden. I think they are just plain ugly. Fairings look better but still not good. I also ride with my mouth closed and always wear eye protection.
Like others, did not use one accept colder, winter days. Now it never comes off. I just got through testing Long Ride Shields new shield. It is small compared to HD's, curved, and works very well. No buffetting because it is curved at the top. You look over it, not through it. The dark smoked one is very nice. The hardware is frikin solid, heavy duty, chrome or black. 25% off right now also.
I don't particular care for the shields either. But I do have
a detachable that is real nice to have when it's cold out. For the docking points I just replaced them with regular panhead bolts. For as little as I use it, I'll do just like the pillion and rider floorboards and put the docking points back on when needed. It's only 4 bolts.
I have to say though with the clear shield and chrome framing, it really doesn't look all that bad when it's clean. I may cut it to make it low profile someday.
