Default spark plug gapping?

Hey guys, just a shout out to anyone who's owns a 05 fxst carburated model, or other with a 88cu engine. I have one with V&H short shots and that's about it for mods. Do you have an optimum gap that works best for your bike. I bought a set of HD 6R12 plugs and just wondered what is the best gap setting anyone found. Thanks

I believe the manual says .040 for the gap.

Manual says between .038 and .043. I set mine at .040; I have a 2006 Fatboy with a carb abd V&H pipes

Set mine at .040 with a feeler gauge shims, use that lil round thing to get it close then the feeler gauge shims for accuracy.
But I'm the guy comin back at 2500 miles and cleanin and regappin the plugs til 5k then replacement.

I was asking because some cars run better at max gap when older and mid gap earlier in the engine's life. I can't imagine the gap between would make a difference but I do run 91octane in it. I'm not trying to put to much thought into it but just thought I'd ask.

Cars? Ah, ya talkin about ignition upgrades and wider plug gap. Stock scoot, refer to the manual.

Ok here's the update on my plugs. The plugs in it were the E3 plugs and they were black with soot. I have read the archives on plugs and didn't just shut off the engine after a long ride to read them nor put on more then 20miles on her after changing all the oils and filter. I changed back to the oem plugs and put on a new air filter to get a better read on what's going on with the bike in general. I do warm up the bike per the way the manual says to and wonder if they were black because of it?
