so doing a swap on my 02 fxdl, have a 99 fxstd wideglide front end I am putting on, have everything in place except for rim up front. 99 is a 3/4 axle, so my question is this.
Can I put any 3/4 axle softail rim on? or does it have to be pre 2000? I am looking at 80 spoke 21 x 3 or 3.5 rim but being new at the whole swap deal am not sure where to look or what to look for on this rim. any help?
When swapping wheels two things to look at axle size and will it fit in between the forks and caliper.. The axle size can be changed out by simply changing out bearings. If the wheel fits in between the forks it just a matter of proper spacing of wheel and spacing the caliper.. Yes, you can put a post 2000 wheel on a pre 2000 front end.. As far as wheels I just put a 21x3.5 60 spoke on a 2006 FXST with a pre 2000 wide glide front end that i ordered from Jireh cycles.. Very reasonable..
The pre 2000 wheel will need different spacers than the post 2000 rim. They will be longer due to the Timken bearings in the wheel as opposed to the sealed bearings in the newer wheels.
