I'm debating on buying and installing Progressive 422's on my 06 FXST. The only problem is I don't want lose any comfort when riding 2 up with my girlfriend. If it was just myself mainly on the bike I wouldn't care.
So the question is anyone have 422's and ride double a lot. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
I love the 422's. I had the stock shocks cranked to the max preload and I was not happy with the ride at all.
I did not want to lower the bike so I don't use that feature. I wanted less sag and a smoother ride. With some suggestions from Progressive, I set the preLoad at 50% and it has been great ever since.
If you and your passenger total up to 275 lbs it so the 50% preload will be a good place to start.
I ride solo most of the time and am looking for a smoother ride. So far, the Softail aint' so soft. I would like to drop the rear suspension an inch or so too. So they do ride better than stock?
I've done about 500 miles on my 422's thus far this season (weather's been crummy lately)..i don't know what my preload is set at, but i've done about a 1.5-1.8" drop in the rear, and the bike is much more comfortable to ride, and feels like it holds better in the corners. Though, I've also done the RaceTech Gold Valve Emulators in the forks too.
I have mine about 1 1/2" down and it's a little stiffer than stock but not much. When i didn't have them dropped they rode great, way better than stock.
Thanks for the responses guys. Suspension will most likely be the next "big" mod for me on my Softail. Progressive definitely sounds like the way to go even when riding 2 up.
Check out the new progressive shocks. They have an easy adjustable preload mounted by the passenger footpeg I believe. I wish they would have been available when I got my progressives. I would have slapped them on without a second thought. I think they are the 422 rap (remote adjustable preload).
