Help with some EVO info, please
I've been searching the site for some answers to questions I have on the EVO engine. I've been off of two wheels for nearly 20 years, and my last HD was a mid-80s Shovel. I'd appreciate your help.
The FXSTC I own now has an S&S "E" model carb, and aftermarket pipes. I think there may be a modified cam installed based on the idle quality of the engine. There is also an HD high performance ignition module installed and another mysterious black box wired in under the seat. When riding at warm temperatures (75 and up), the bike will give a bit of spark knock under moderate acceleration. I've tried higher octane fuel, and if anything it adds to the problem.
I'm running 20w50 Harley oil in it, but I'm thinking I should switch over to Amsoil to help the engine run cooler. I'm wondering if the engine is just running a bit too hot. Should I get an oil tank stick with temp gauge to see how hot the oil is getting? What is a good range?
I really appreciate your help.
Any methods you guys have had good luck with?
That extra black box could be something for the lights, funny but my bike came with one in front of the battery, I disconnected it, reconected the stock wiring and everything worked, still does 4 years later.
The oil subject has been beaten to death around here but just use 20-50 dino oil, EVO's run pretty cool compaired to twinkies. My bike came with one of those temp/dipsticks, it's a good thing to check when you get off the bike, kind of lets you know if something changes. Mine runs 170-180 and slightly higher on a real hot summer day.
To get rid of carbon, get one of those plant mister spray bottles and with the engine running, spray the water mist in the carb. Keep the motor going and repeat the misting, black filth will come out the pipes if it is carboned up. Becareful, if it starts puking black junk it will go all over the place and it's hard to get off some things if it is allowed to dry...
Hope this helps some

SYN Oils alone won't cool her down very much anyway.
If U got her used why not get a full Elc check and tune up to get her running good.
Right now Ur just trouble shooting, nothing wrong with that, but if U get her checked out and all the bad or old parts that needs replaced or close to needing replaced with new ones and get a good tune then U'll know shes in really good shape and have a trouble free ride for yrs to come.
Just me, but I'd rather spend $$$ and know all is well rather than break down somewhere on the road because of another failed old part.
