Not an MD but I don't think switching bikes is going to help. It's the jolting that is going to mess you up. Maybe a neck brace? As your Doc his opinion. I hope it all works out for you. Maybe beach bars might help, being lower and pulled back.

You've already got heaps of input on here, so all I can say is I like the switchback too. I've ridden it too and it was pretty damn comfy. BUT I have heard that they get a bit uncomfortable after a while. I can't say from experience though

I have degenerative disk disease in my neck and back. Your problem may be with the high bars and the forwards. My doctor is a rider and suggested I change out my Keystones and forwards for mids and low bars. I did and the pain is gone. I'm not sure of your situation but it could be the answer. By the way, my bike is a Nightster so it's never going to be a soft ride. Kurt
