Default Softail Springer exhaust help

I recently posted a few weeks ago about my change from Vance and Hines long shots to short shots on a 1999 Softail Springer and had issues... Bike started up with the new pipes and ran for a minute and then died. Outcome was the new pipes flooded the engine. I cleared the fuel put new plugs in and the longshots back on, bike fired back up and has ran perfect ever since.

Longshots look like crap, all mangled and scratched from the previous owner(my uncle). So i'm thinking about putting the shorts back on, but i'm a little nervous...I bought the shortshots at a swap meet and they don't have baffles. A few questions i have, the short shots are not baffled, don't have them, but I do have a set that I could cut and make fit. Second should I scrap that idea and get torque cones, or should I use both torque cones and the modified baffles?

My 3rd question is...would the shortshots without baffles cause the engine to flood due a lack of back pressure? Do I need to get new jets and re-jet? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Put a set of velocity cones in the exhaust ports that will give it some back pressure needed to function correctly... 20 and easy to install

Try adjusting you air mixture screw on the carb if it has been drilled. If that does not help enough then try rejetting. Carbs are easy enough to work on yourself.

Whenever there is a exhaust change (that is not just a replacement of the same type of pipe) you HAVE to re-tune. Whether it be re-jetting a carb or adjusting an FI ignition box, it has to be done. Going to a shorter pipe with NO baffles will increase your exhaust flow, which will lean out your mixture. So the flooding is another issue, seems strange that it would fix itself with putting the old pipe set back on though...

Read this and it will tell you what to do.

You are lucky to have a carb. It is much less expensive and easier to tune the bike.
