There's a recall on some regulators from 2012. My wife's Heritage had one. The dealer can look up the serial number of it and see if it qualifies.

Dawg posted the Service Bulletin on this (M-1325) when it was issued on June 11, 2012.

There was a bad batch and they could be identified by the date code on the Regulator.

Date codes; 4011-5211 and 0112-0912 were to be replaced.

They were on 2012 touring, softail, dyna, and XL family models built approximately October 1, 2011 thru March 31, 2012.

The service bulletin had this notice:

"This no cost offer expires two years from the date of the program announcement, ending on June 11, 2014."

Either you or an HD dealer should check the date code. If it's affected, you will get a free replacement. They will also replace it whether it is "acting up" or not.

Good luck

My dad had this issue on his 2012 FLSTC. Happened at about 300 miles. Luckily that day we were in the dealers parking lot and the bike would not start. We pushed it into service and waited about 2 hours. They said it was just a low battery and sent us on our way. The next day, my dad and I went to Dublin to see check out Arlen Ness. We rode there and were inside for maybe an hour. Tried to leave and his bike would not start again. This time it was closing time for those guys and everyone in the shop had gone home. Luckily the guys at Arlen were cool enough to push the bike onto the showroom floor and charge the battery with a battery charger. They even gave him a full tank of gas so he wouldnt have to shut the bike off to get gas on the way home. Hats off to Arlen Ness! We called our local dealer from dublin when this happened and because they were almost closed they said "what do you want us to do about it?". Hung up on them. Limped the bike home. Went back to the dealer and they found the recall magically that was not there the day before. They wanted him to wait 3 days to get a replacement voltage regulator. Lets just say some words were exchanged and then they decided to pull one off a new bike. Since then he is still having issues with his battery dying if we do not plug it into a battery tender every week or so. Dealer said the battery is fine. My dad is afraid to go anywhere far on his 2012 FLSTC which only 6000 miles on it, for fear it will not start. When we go out, we always have jumper cables now.

My dealer actually called me on the phone and told me about the recall. I rode in on a Saturday, they pulled the bike into the service area without waiting and 15 minutes later was advised my voltage regulator did not require replacement.

I almost didn't have time to buy chrome or motorclothes.

There are some good dealers out there.
