Default New lights (battery drain) on Heritage Softail

I installed these lights last night,

Headlight - PIIA H4 Super Plasma GT-X Wattage 60/55W = 135/125W
Passing Lamps - PIIA H11 Xtreme White Plus Wattage 55W = 110W

and I am leaving for Laconia later today, 8 hour ride. As I installed each one, I turned the bike on to make sure they were working. Once installed, the wife came out to see how they looked & I turned them on again. All in total, lights were probably on minute or two at the most. This morning, the bike wouldn't start, now on the charger. Any thoughts as to maybe why the battery was drained, and if driving will keep it charged up enough for starting.

We're about 8 hrs away from laconia, and my friend's cables are just arriving this morning. He asked if I could install his new bars today as he waited for a couple of months for them to come. I explained that I could do it no problem, but explained the consequences of doing this install just before a long trip, as he isn't mechanically inclined. After telling him the risks of getting stranded on the side of the road, he finally opted out until after he gets back.

Long story short, I would change your lights back today and deal with it when you get back. You don't want to have to jump start everytime! Every problem is superceded by a change.

Did you have the lights on without the engine running? Check battery connections, Start bike and check voltage at battery @ 1200RPM. Should be 14.5 volts. I'd add a switch to turn of the passing lights as the bike only charges @ 1200 RPM and above. So stop lights and heavy traffic will do you in.

Engine was off. There is a switch for the passing lamps on the triple tree housing. Was thinking of running with them off in town, just on the highway till we get back home on Monday.

The lights will drain the battery real quick without the engine running, even at idle. Best bet is only use the aux. lights while moving. Good luck, let us know.
