I have an 05 Heritage Softail... It has stage 3, a big boar kit and Vance & Hines Pipes... & I just LOVE my bike!!! My problem.... When I got ready to go to the Spring Rally at Thunder Beach in Panama City, I checked my bike, changed the oil, checked tire pressures and changed the spark plugs. I was ready for my trip. Half way down, my battery and engine light came on. I turned off the spot lights and the fog lights and the battery/engine light went off. When I got to Panama City, after unloading and unpacking, I was going to go out for a ride and the bike wouldn't start! So..... I got a new battery the next day and they did a quick charge on it. I got back home, but on the way, and any time since, when I turn my spots and fog lights on, the engine/battery light keeps coming on. Two out of five days a week I go to work when it's dark out... I love to ride (I got @54,000 miles under my belt in 12 years.. not bad for a single lady, you think?), but live 40 miles from my job and I'm not comfortable riding in the dark through country road and highway without my lights. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions what the problem(s) might be before I give in to taking it in to the shop? Thanks for all your help!
Sounds like your bike isn't charging when running. Get a voltage meter and start checking. Running it should make 13.5-14 volts, IMHO the newer ones need to have a few RPMS to make full charge. If running low RPM alot you might not be putting enough volts back in the battery. A volt/ohm meter is your best friend for checking voltage issues.
