Default HD Boom stereo cracking windshield?

Had the new Boom speaker system installed on the OL's heritage last winter (the one that bolts to the inside of the windshield. I noticed a crack in the windshield around the center mounting bolt. The dealer service manager assumed it was over tightened and ordered up a new windshield. Now about 2 months later I see the crack starting again. Anybody else install one of these or have this problem?

I am not discounting it completely, but I doubt those little speakers are doing that. Not sure what else it could be but......

Normal levels I'd guess.

I would guess that it is not the vibration of the speakers creating the crack, but rather the additional pressure and weight put on that part of the shield that would be doing it. Maybe if rubber grommets of some kind could be placed between the stereo and the hole it may help. Just a thought.

Mine did exactly the same thing. I figured I tightened it too much, but now am not sure. It was kind of a slight spiderweb type cracking on the center bolt. I have since gotten rid of it and went to a fairing setup, but thought I would throw in my .02

I ran into a couple of guys at the local HD a couple of weeks ago that were both talking about this very thing. The conclusion that we came to was that when traveling at highway speeds the pressure from the wind is being transferred down thru the windshield. This pressure, or force if you would like to call it, is what is causing the drilled holes to spider web or crack. But, might thought on it was that if they are mounted to the metal strip on the windshield you should not have any cracking. The same thing happens if you bolt something such as a turn signal directly to a fender without any added support surrounding the bolt to absorb the force. The fender will absorb any and all vibrations and eventually start to crack.

A windshield only last me about two seasons. Sand and rocks and what ever start to pit them. To me 80-90 bucks every other year is no big deal. I have had my boom auido on for a little over a year now with no cracks.
