Default Question About Exhaust

Hello,

I am a new, first time Harley owner. I traded my Kawasaki Drifter 1500 for a 2009 Heritage Classic. My Heritage already has a Screamin Eagle Stage 1intake on it, but I am not sure what kind of exhaust. I had V&H Longshots on my metric bike, and thought that it sounded pretty good.

The pipes on my Heritage are okay, but I would like them to be a bit louder and more agressive. I really don't know that much about all of this stuff. I am sure that it is a personal taste thing, but I would like to know what others have installed and like the sound of.

Pics would help to determine what exhaust you might have. Also have you tried taking the baffles out? If it's a V&H, quiet baffles will totally change the way it sounds.

Not stock mufflers, could be SE mufs, but they'd be stamped. If looking @ new pipes (not just muffs) check out V & H Big Radious. Look and sound awesome on a softtail. Others: 2" Bassani's for a crispy "rap" sound.

I had Sampson Big Guns on my Fatboy, sound "throatier" and set off alot of car alarms (when desired). Expect to pay $500 - $700 for a good quality set of pipes, or 1/2 of that to change out mufflers (if you can).

Don't forget to re-map, or re-jet after changing pipes and/or Air Filter. Good luck, lots a choices.

Those look like Rush pipes. Look in the end, and if you see a small cross bar welded across the end of the baffles, then that is what they are. I have a set of Rush and they sound OK but are not very loud with a 2" baffle. Vance and Hines is the way to go. I am having Side Shots installed as we speak. I have never seen them (chrome) on a Heritage before, in fact I can't find a picture of them (chrome) on a Heritage on the net, just one video on youtube. Whichever pipes you buy make sure they are some sort of 2 into 2 crossover pipe if not a 2 into 1 so you don't degrade performance.

Default Big can of worms.

You re going to open up a BIG can of worms when you ask what pipes to use on your bike, I did it awhile ago and it went on for awhile.

We have Bassani Road Rage 2-1 pipes on our 2012 FLSTC, Nice DEEP rumble and not TOO loud. Drag Specialties has them for $859.00

Here is a video of the pipes.

I know that I'm probably going to sound stupid, but I really don't know much about all of this. How does it degrade performance if you don't have 2 into 1 pipes? Are true duals a bad idea?

The stock exhaust you have on is actually a crossover style system. This improves low end torque (seat of the pants). A 2 into 2 system will lower torque but increase horsepower. Torque is what you want for better acceleration and performance. Horse power will improve top end speed but who goes that fast.
Your best bet would be a 2 into 1 system but many people don't like the looks of them. A crossover system while not as efficient as a 2 into 1 is a good compromise and looks good as well. Make sure you know what type system you are buying. Many systems look identical i.e. Vance and Hines Long Shots (a 2 into 2 system) and the Vance and Hines Big Shots Long (a crossover system).
