Default Carb or FI?

Hi All newbe here,
Hope this is the correct place to ask this.
Always wanted a early Fatboy and have been offered one (2001) with fuel injection. My question is are they reliable or would i be better off looking for one with carburetor?
Many Thanks for any help.

Fuel injection is a good thing. Bike runs great any weather, any elevation, any temperature. If carbs were better HD would still make them.

Oh boy, here we go. The only advantage to a carb is an easy roadside repair.

Cars haven't been carbed since the last model Jeep Cherokee in '91. Also those cars are doing just fine...

Long time Carb guy here, I'm a convert to EFI. to me it's the only way to go EXCEPT for the Magneti Marelli units in the early EFI Harleys.

Just personal preference between carb and FI IMO. No petcock with FI and like Deuuuce stated, carbs are still salvageable on the side of the road. However, I love it in the fall when my neighbor's carbed dyna is choking away the morning and I just startup and ride off with my FI.

I prefer the fuel injection but really miss the reserve valve.

The bike is a 2001 Fatboy, were they using the Magneti Marelli units on them, if so how can i tell if it has that?
Was 2001 a good year for the FLSTF?

Thanks again for all the help everyone.

I believe the Magneti Marelli units have 2 fuel lines at the back left corner of the tank where the petcock would be. Delphi has just 1. But I could be wrong. I think H-D went to Delphi in 2000. Someone in here knows for sure.

Yes, 2 connections for the fuel line on the tank. But according to the information on the nightrider site, they still used Marelli in 2001.

As the bike has been running properly with the original Italian EFI system for the past 11 years there should be no reason to think it will fail on you now. (my opinion of course)

Either is fine if (IF!!!) it's 02 or newer. The Delphi syst came along
in 02. The other (older syst ) had problems.
The Delphi runs like a swiss watch.
I'm a carb guy (FI wasn't avai on a Softail in 00 when I bought mine)
My wife's 03 is FI and has been flawless.
I did have the pre-tune done w/SERT @ purchase (with pipes & A/Clnr)
But they never did the final (Dyno run) so it's a tad lean.
It IS hotter to ride than the carb'd 00.

If 01 or older -- Go carb !!!!!
