Default Oil leaking from primary, i think!

I sprung an oil leak on my 1994 Heritage softail. It is leaking down the inside of the frame by the primary, could this be the cause. The bolt came loose and fell out of the primary chain tensioner.

as I recall that screw does not go all the way through the primary, so no that should not cause a primary leak. There are a couple of seals that are accessable on the back side of the inner primary, it's probably one of those, with the main shaft seal being the most suspect, but you'll have to pull the inner primary off and look at things to determine the actual cause of the leak.

I got to thinking about what you said about the bolt going all the way through. So I took my pick and stuck it through the silicone (Harley used) and it does go all the way through and I could feel the pick underneath out the back side of the primary.
I think before doing all the work of taking the whole primary off, I will put the bolt back in a seal it up and see if it still leaks.
Thanks!

you're half way there, just take it all off and inspect it, if you don't and it still leaks you're gonna spend more money on gaskets and have to take it all apart again anyway... I have a 1995 heritage and just had a similar problem and I was chasing the leak for a while, it turned out to be the race that is on the main shaft of the tranny, it rode into the seal on the tranny making the tranny leak but the oil was running down the inner primary, I guess this is a common issue and jims makes a new race that fixes this problem and will not ever ride in again id check that out too, here's a pic of the tranny with the new race, you should have a small gap between the race and the seal

Thanks everyone for the help, it was just that bottom bolt for the chain tensioner bracket. That bolt goes all the way through, now it is sealed up without any leaks.

Default Oil leak

I have an oil leak on my 2000 Heritage Softail on one of the two oil line that come from the tank to where it enters the engine. It's the one on the inside. Is this an easy fix or do I need to take it to a certified mechanic?

Dave, you're interjecting on a 3 year old thread. I think you'd have better results starting a new thread describing your problem.

I'm sure you have the twin cam 88 motor, mine is an Evo motor, but if you are a little mechanically inclined, you be able to fix it.
Just buy a manual and do it yourself. Using the manual one just time, will save you money, and pay for the manual.
