Default Looking for Opinions.....

What do you all think?

96 Heritage, 36K miles, $7000
04 Heritage, 46K miles, $9250
03 Road King Classic, 48K miles, $9400 (I know this is the softail section, but this is a nice bike)

ALl bikes are in pretty good shape. The Road King is probably in the best. I'm used to doing all my own wrenching on my autos but never worked on bikes. The 96 appeals to me because of that. The newer EFI bikes are nice though and a lot more efficient.

What say you?

Oh, and I know what KBB says. Just want to know everyone's thoughts on the bikes themselves.

Seems like a lot of miles on all the bikes.

Have not ridden the 96. Have ridden newer heritage and RKs. There are mods to all the bikes. The 96 has a new engine (Evo) that has about 1100 miles on it. There's 36K on the chassis. Haven't got a good explanation about why it needed a new engine other than "it needed it". Here's the mods as I know them

04 FLSTC- screamin eagle pipes, lowered 2", easy clutch
03 RK - Big Bore Kit, Power Commander, Cams and a Heavy Duty Clutch, rhinehart dual exhaust
96 FLSTC - new engine, Stage 1, python exhaust.

I'm really torn between the two models although I lean to the Heritage. I like the low seat. This is to get me to work and back as often as possible and I need storage to carry my stuff. What else?

Correction....got my bikes mixed up. I've seen a lot of them lately.

The 04 has 15K on it and is pretty stock except for an engine guard with highway pegs.

I wouldn't go for the 96. The 04 is only a little more...but the road king is tempting. I'm not a huge fan of the RK but honestly I'd probably go for that

I just got a 96 Heritage about 3 weeks ago and love it. No balancers and no rubber mount so it still feels like a motorcycle should, lots of extras, and a S&S carbed Big Twin Evo was just what I was looking for. The Evo's are known to be bulletproof, and with that being said I wouldn't buy that 96. If it "needed" a new engine at 36k that owner either didn't know how to maintain it or didn't care to. It was most likely rode hard, hung up wet and never given any love. Riding hard is one thing but they do need to be taken care of and shown some love. That being said if the road king is the black anniversary edition I wouldn't be able to pass it up. Both the 03 and 04 if fuel injected will have the better Delphi FI (more upgrade and tuning friendly, no offense to you MM guys). Never had a Twin Cam but I think once they got past the initial years of 99-00 they've been pretty good and even the early years were just some bugs that you'll always have with new designs. My 2 cents. Buy what moves you when you ride it.

Given those choices, I'd go for the Evo (96 Heritage) if and only IF the new motor is an genuine H-D motor. Evos are bulletproof and that's low mileage for that bike. Those Twin Cam motors, with that kinda mileage, will need the cam chain tensioners checked, since there may be no way to tell if they've already been checked/replaced/upgraded already. May need to put some good money into 'em before you even get a chance to ride. JMO.
