Default school me

I've had the bug ever since my buddy talked me into riding his new 2012 Superglide. I'm looking a older bikes and all I know for sure is, I want an EVO motor and belt drive. I'm finding myself partial to the softails too. I know the EVO came out in 84 at 1340. That's about it. What models are prone to maint issues? Which one offer the best bang for the buck? I'm mostly motivated by reliability and price. I want something my wife and I can go for fall rides on. I'm finding plenty of nice rides, I'm just not sure what I'm looking at. Any advice ia appreciated. Thanks, Tony

If your dead set on an EVO I would ask this question over in the EVO classic section. They will be able to give more info than you'll want to read. I own a 94 heritage softail which is an EVO and love it. I believe they ran all the way up to 99.

Do what the previous poster said.

Also, buying a bike is just like buying anything that is used. You must look it over - carefully. Take it for a test ride, and not just around the block. Put as many miles on as the owner will comfortably let you. If it's clean and well taken care of (you'll know one when you see one), there's a good chance the bike is also in good working order and all the fluids were changed regularly. And if that's the case, those bikes will for a very long time.

And remember, it's a buyer's market. If something doesn't look or feel right, move on and keep looking. Good luck.

And BTW, the bug doesn't go away......

Hey Tony, an EVO is a great bike and they'll be around for many more years to come. I'd look for the latest year affordable, and I'd want it mostly stock with the exception of breather, pipes & cam. Many believe that 1996 thru 1999 were the best of the EVOs, but they're all great engines. The stock cam bearing was a weak point. So you'll want to know if it was changed to a "Torrington" brand bearing. If it has over 50k miles on it you might ask if the drive belt had ever been changed. Then of course check all the typical stuff when buying used, such as brake pads, tires, oil leaks, etc. A lot of great EVOs can typically be had from as low as around $6K to $8k. It's a buyers market and opportunity has never been better.

Good luck with your search and post some pics of whatever bike you get
