Progressive Fork Drop In Kit question...
I have an 06 Fat Boy and just about ready to install the kit but wanted to ask the forum this. Is it as easy as it says? I mean they say it is a 30 minute job. Sounds pretty simple. I don't have to deal with the fork oil either? Just curious for a 30 minute task. I've got plenty of beer if it turns into a nightmare...LOL...Any help or advice out there? P.S., also installing the Shotgun Shock, but that is a different task at hand...I will post about that later on...
I installed them on my 09 Train. It is not bad but definitely not as easy as advertised. It is only a drop in kit for the Dyna models shown in the videos. The Softail kit is quite a bit more involved. When you have them apart you should switch to heavy fork oil (I didn't drain mine out the bottom as I had to remove the fork. I just poured it out of the top.) It will improve the ride, especially when you drop the rear with the Shogun, and get ride of a lot of the nose dive in the front.
Thanks for the replies. Yeah, after reading the instructions, it is for sure NOT a 30 minute task. I tried getting info from Progressive themselves on why they claim it only takes a half hour to do. The Dyna does. Also, I wanted to ask if they would give me any input on how to do my 06 Fatboy in 30 minutes. LOL. No return replies from them yet. I was hoping I did not have to remove practically the front end to do this. I am pretty good with a wrench, but was curious if I should just leave it up to a local indy to do it. That was the reason I got the drop ins, so I would'nt have to do a front end job..LOL...Any one have any pics on their install? Thanks...for any more replies...
I have a 04 Heritage and this is what i did, jack the bike up just enough for the front wheel to clear the ground. When you get everything off jack it up a little at a time and slide your forks through your tripple trees until you have room to get your springs out. I didn't take them all the way off or remove my fender and wheel. The reason for this is the cap on your trees is not big enough to get the springs out like a dyna is. I didn't change my fork oil to a heavier one either and mine rides just fine. If you decide to pull them off i would put heavier oil in then. It took me about 45 minutes to do mine and looks great.
Thanks RnR. What do you mean about everything off? The 2 cap bolts on top? If so, how did you take them off without damaging the Bolts? Also, you didn't scratch your forks sliding them through your trees? Sorry if I misunderstood you...

You have to slide your forks out of the trees regardless if you are taking them completely off or to just gain access to the top of your fork tubes. Some guys take wheel, fender and slide each fork completely out. I guess i am too lazy to do all that so i just took the top stuff off mine and jacked it up slowly and slid both forks down at the same time leaving my wheel and fender and brake cable in tact. After you slide them out of your trees 6 inches or so you can get the stock springs out and your new ones in without taking the forks completely off. You will see what i am talking about once you start, its kinda hard to explain without pics and i didn't take any when i did it. Its not hard, it was my first rodeo doing this and it tuned out great.
