As far as leg coverings go, I prefer leather over-pants. They wear like pants, but go over what you are already wearing. they typically zip and/or snap along the outside of the leg.
You say that you won't be riding in the cold much, but what about riding in the rain?
They keep your entire bottom half of your body dry. Chaps will give you wet crotch and butt.

Jafrun has some nice $99 thermal lined chaps.
Read the reviews, sounds like a good buy.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I kinda knew which way I was leaning but it's nice to get the opinions of those who've been there.

I just got back from Cabela's and got his and hers "heavy weight" long underwear and went to Walmart and got two pairs of Walls bib coveralls. Total cost= $178.

I doublt we'll need the coveralls but I'd rather be safe than cold.

The coveralls do take up a lot of space but was able to get both pair in one of the saddle bags. With my other saddlebag and my Saddlemen's S3200 sissybar suitcase I've got plenty of space.

Thanks again.

Thanks,
Why would her chaps sit seldom-used in the garage, when they can be handy for a "date night" (scantily-clad, but for the chaps) around the house???

Coveralls are better for warmth going down the road. Your choice if you need to pick one or the other.

Freeze her on the scoot, and maybe she'll need to cuddle really bad. It's all about strategy, ya know .

Of course I'm talking about my bike

Drives me nuts seeing some fool in his assless chaps with a sleeveless shirt and fingerless gloves! What's the point? I don't get it. Then again, I didn't much get the Village People either.

Live in Western NC, ride all winter, not cold as north east or rockies, but can ride every month of year. Lot of days in upper 30s and 40s, but below 60. Find long johns, jeans and chaps fine. Good thing about chaps, I am on a softail with not much storage, don't take much room and can take along rain paints, easy to wear over chaps. Not bulky and easy to take off at a stop.

Damn CrossBone is right, Jafrun does have some great pricing. I may just have to order some chaps too if they can get them to me by this Friday.

For that temperature riding, I suggest fleece-lined jeans. They are great in all weather, but especially nice between 40 and 80 degrees. They can be had from Cabellas or Sportsman's Guide. No need for the extra layers unless you are expecting precipitation.
