Think you will be happy with chaps. Thing about insulated jeans is when you stop and its a little warm you got little flexibility. About anything outdoors, layers best route, you can change as the day changes...
Fleece lined jeans are nice but they are not wind proof. The key to keeping your legs warm is layers and first and foremost blocking the wind. Leather is always best but I just cant get past the gay look of assless chaps lol so I found a pair of windproof ski pants that fit snug like a wet suit and i use them like long johns under my jeans they block the wind are very comfy and work great.
EJ, I think your idea is a good one, however if I put on tight fitting ski pants I don't think my wife will leave me alone enough to go riding because at 5' 8" 250 .lbs, I look gooddddddd in a pair of spandex pants
But seriously, if I did a lot of cold weather riding, the $100 investment might be warranted.
I'm just trying to make a run this weekend without spending $1000 in riding gear to do it.
The latest weather report is 20% of rain and upper 50's temp. I think we'll be OK with the long johns, chaps and coveralls. If not, I'm taking the car.
