Default New Softail owner

I traded my 2008 Street Glide in for a 2013 Heritage Softail Classic.

So far it is a great fit as far as comfort, but the one thing I really miss is the sound of the pipes.

I only have 250 miles on it so far, only got out 2 days since I have had it 4 days ago. I am hoping the pipes open up a bit and get a bit louder, is this the case?

My wife has very sensitive hearing and I understand her need to to have things on the quiet side, but I would love the have the pipes ring out a bit more than the engine.
My Street Glide had stock pipes but sounded great without being to loud.

I will probably wait until next year if I were to do anything with the pipes, but I am afraid some would be to much and I am also needed to keep expenses low, I am already in the dog house.

So those of you that have a 2013 with stock pipes, have they become better with some time?

Thanks
Dan

Stock pipes are what they are. You can drill out the baffels to open it up a little, but in order to get the sound you seem to be looking for, you're gonna need new pipes, or at least new slip-ons...Vance and Hines makes a great product for both. I am running Vance and Hines BigShots, great sound and not over powering for those with sensitive ears

You can drill out the baffles on your stock pipes, and put in some Thunder Torque inserts to Change the sound. We have different size inserts in either quiet or wavy. You can see them at this LINK.

Watch this
and you can see the different sounds that you can achieve.

I am also a new softail owner, new cycle owner and new rider. Yesterday I did my stage one upgrade. Bought Vance and hines Black big radius 2 into 2 pipes. I am shocked at the differece in sound and performance. The HP and torque was increased by almost 10 percent. And i love the looks.

Congrats on the new Heritage, you should post some pics. Sounds like either drilling the baffles or new slip-ons is the way to go.

First I Hope U love U Heritage as much as the wife and I have. Its a great bike for 2up riding, and U can load her up for that trip if needed and still she'll ride as good as most touring bikes.. That's IMO after riding most of them..

Going on 6yrs and 41k and she's (wife) been on the back 98% of the time. Yeah mostly ridding in our county on 2-3hr daily rides..

I rode mine back in 07 after buying her new, for 1k, with the stock set up to break her in...

Then I did the usual STG1, SE-AC, Rush 2'', SERT and dyno.. All this was to get her running better and help cool her down.. Which it did about 15* on the oil temp.

The stock pipes did sound a little better (think I just got used to them), but really with all steel baffles they are not going to change much. (nothing to burn out)

Tell U the truth,, I was going to suggest some Rush Muffs,, I love mine,, but if Ur wife has sensitive hearing, then IMHO U need to get the muffs behind the BAGS...

In fact I am in this dilemma right now. I love my Rush for their SOUND... they are hard to beat.. but on my last trip 3 weeks ago with the Heritage's staggered pipe system I had the front muff pounding in my right ear for 6 days and 2k miles... Yeppers I almost alway put in my right ear plug, but on the trip, several times I took it out at fill up time and forgot to put it back in. Those next couple hrs riding almost hurt my ears at hi-way speeds.. I'll add with the 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 baffles, it's be a lot better,, Plus now with cams, they will and do get louder after the cam install...

So IMHO U need to look at getting the end of the pipes behind Ur bags to help U wifes issues.
Via it be some 2-1's or True Duals... For Me the TD's bring the left header pipe very close to Ur left thigh.. For me,, thats a NO_NO.
I am personally thinking some 2-1's, with them U'd also gain some low-mid TQ, which is always welcomed.

I'll vouch for the DKCustoms Thunder Torque inserts. Another satisfied customer. Also agree with Oct1949 on getting long pipes to get the sound behind you.

2" Rush pipes on my 2012 Heritage, some popping after Stage 1 and new air cleaner. Yes a bit loud in my right ear after a while so I may think about an ear plug for long rides. Still debating whether to put the old air cleaner back on or a Dyno tune.

We have the Bassani Road Rage 2-1 on our '12 Heritage and they have the right sound, not to LOUD and that DEEP rumble when cruising. As you can see in the video the pipe end is behind the bags. A bit pricier but in the long run a good investment.

Oh, BTW thats my wifes painted toes.
After the pipe install the next mod you will need to do is install the Shotgun Shock air suspension system, now that is the BEST mod you can do.
