Default stage 1 questions

Been on the dyna side of this forum but I just purchased a 2002 carb'ed heritage and the previous owner told me the bike has a stage 1 air cleaner on it. It still has the original harley football air cleaner cover so I removed that and this is what I see. I would like to get rid of the football cover but as you can see in the pic the two rubber hoses on the back side stick out. I would like to go with something round, my question is can I loosen the two bolts that go into the head and somehow swivel them down and then shorten the rubber hoses to help tuck them inward? Also can I clean and reuse my air filter? it appears to have a red element that looks dirty. Thanks!

can you shorten the hoses on the other end? Looks like that would pull them in. Yes, you can clean the filter. Get some K&N filter cleaner and filter oil. There are some other cleaners available as well, some people will say soap and water or 409. I have used those as well, with no bad result, but not necessarily recommended. There are plenty of instructions on how to do it on line. A little of the oil goes long way. Too much and you'll make a mess, trust me.

thanks for the reply. yes, i believe i can shorten the rubber hoses as both ends have hose clamps. I would need to rotate the upper fittings as well as the lower elbow fittings on the backside of the aircleaner base upward. just wanted to make sure that wasnt going to cause any problems. I noticed a little oil in the base. is that normal?

There can be a little oil down there, either from too much filter oil or slightly overserviced engine oil. As long as it's not spraying all over everything, don't sweat it. I don't know why you couldn't move the bolts and I wouldn't be afraid to try, but I never messed with them on my carb'd bikes so I can't say no problem based on experience. The EFI bikes are a little different and don't have the hoses. I do know this, the plain round A/C cover from HD probably won't cover those bolts. I have one and it doesn't cover the equivalent mounting on the EFI set up.
