Default Drive Belt Rubbing On Top Side

My 2001 FXSTB has started to rub the belt against the starter shaft for the first time in the 8 years since I put a lowering kit (shock extensions) on it and it makes a whining sound you can hear when slowing to a stop.

To softail springs sag with time? The belt is properly adjusted and I have tried raising it within the limits of the lowering kit.

Do I need to take the extensions off or what else could it be?

Thanks,

Tom

With no replies I guess I'll take off the extensions and see what happens.

All springs will "sag" over time. The belt should not be rubbing at all unless you have lost the bumper that limits the wheel travel.

I get a little rub on mine, 2" lowered, but only on big bumps. You should be able to run it almost back to stock height on the bolts. If its rubbing as bad as you're saying, I would think there are other issues. You can check if the shocks are sagging, stock height on mine was 12.25" from the bottom of the fender strut to the top of the axle nut on the right side. I'm running about 10.125", so a little more than 2" down, still only very slight belt rub.

With much wrestling both shocke are off. Getting the extensions off was a bear. The lock tite they supplied must have been bearing/stud mount type. Heat would have made it easier but we're talking pressurized gas shocks here.

One shock is 1/8" longer than the other. The center section (chrome plated part) sticks out that much on one vs. the other.

Any ideas?
