The differences berween tires are actually noticeable but it depends on your riding and on your bike weight and whether you ride solo or not. Alas
For longer life and riding straight from A to B. Dunlops are good
For a bit more traction specially on corners but less life of tire Metz are good
For dragging pegs , pipes and bike parts around corners aggressively but less tire life than the previous i use Perili. Night dragon .
I never used Avons but they are perfect choice for some who want certain sizes in white wall
This is assuming stock tubed wheel. Changing wheels and going tubeless is a whole other discussion that will exhaust your credit card even more
Congrats Rusty, I have Dunlops, they have 17000 on them and I'm noticing the wear. Maybe I'll be changing next year.Guys do you usually buy and switch both front and back at the same time?
.... Nope , I don't , I get about 9,000mi. on the Rear . and 12,000 on the Front
For those of you who have changed more frequently than I have, and not to hijack the thread, but it is sort of related. My rear wears out way more frequently than my front does, because of this I have just kept replacing it with stock Dunlops so that the front and back tread pattern match. Is this something I should be concerned about? right now it's not an issue as I'm likely going to be looking at a brand new bike by the next time I'm riding, but I'd kind of like to know if I would get any benefit or drawbacks from a mismatched front/back.
Hi Rusty, welcome and congratulations, you have a lot of riding ahead
of you, I am 73 and ride a 06 softail and a couple of sportsters and
enjoy them all. I use dunlop stack type tires and they suit me.
I went the first 40k with Dunlops, never had a problem with them, seemed fine to me.
401's in the rear last about 10k each, and the 402's on the front I change at 20k..
This time at 40k I went the new Michelins Commander II's, possed to last longer,???
I do like them better than the lops because they don't follow the cracks in the road like the ORG HD Lops do.
Also the Mich's with there heavier load limit, they do ride a TINY, tiny, little bit firmer.
Still I would recommend them over the stock HD lops.
Good info here guys, thanks for the input. I put a Metzler 880's front and rear and from the little driving I've been able to do they seem like good and solid tires. Tomorrow I'm going to drive to the coast from Modesto and if there's any problems you KNOW I'll be howl'n about it!
