I have a brand new total stock slim and after doing a few hundred miles I have found that there seems to be quite a lot of engine noise at certain times.
The noise sounds like valvetrain or wrist pin rattle but I'm really not sure and it is most apparent on mild load below 2000rpm.
At first I only noticed it intermittently and when I backed off and then opened it up again it sometimes disappeared but not always.
Today I did a couple of hours and it seemed to get worse as the ride went on but the day was also getting hotter so I expect heat is a factor.
When stopped and idling there is no signs of it.
My questions are,
Should I expect this level of rattle as normal?
Does the 103TC have knock sensors?
So am I worrying for nothing or does this sound like I should be getting it looked at.
As with a lot of these things it is only apparent at certain RPMs and load conditions so if the dealers tech just does the old around the block road test it will likely not show up and they'll just say all is good.
I would have it checked and documented if it's more than normal...take it to an indept. mechanic first, then if not normal to HD. My brother had a brand new heritage that had a NOT NORMAL nock at times when warm (started at 900 miles...), similar to yours ( I was beside him several times...). HD took it apart 3 times, last time with SE parts and it is better, but NOT gone...he got a free extended warranty on the motor...does not make you feel warm and fuzzy though going on a trip...My rocker has the same motor, put them side by side and it is VERY OBVIOUS!! Good luck.
