When I start my fatboy sometimes it gives off a 'whining' noise. If I stop and try again it works fine, other times it just whines. I'm assuming this is the starter (solenoids?).
Question is how difficult is this to either (a) replace, or (b) rebuild. I'm going to assume its the 1.4 KW original starter (?).
Thought I'd ask here before going to the local Harley shop and getting raped. Seeing online starter prices ranging from $70-$400.
From what I googled a starter is roughly the same price as the starter clutch assembly. Might as well just replace the whole unit, no? Or am I missing something here, brainfreeze.
I put an aftermarket starter on my heritage when the solenoid went out,,big mistake. The aftermarket starter didnt line up as well on the ring gear and broke some teeth on the primary gear twice. Rebuilt the old starter and havnt had a problem for 2 years now.
