MONTANA!!!!!!!! How ever if your planing on heading this way I'd recommend doing it in early July as June can be a pretty rain soaked month in this part of the country and the weather almost always gets super nice after the 4th.
All I can say is this State has some of the best most scenic routes in the country. With minimal traffic and a lot of sweet curvy 2 lane high way riding.
It just cant be beat. Plus you'll probably be able to have alot more fun and see alot more then on a marathon ride to the west coast.
Also if your headed this way consider checking out Glacier National Park,
Going to the Sun Road is easily the best ride I've been on, over 13000 feet above sea level the ride and scenery are unparalleled. White Fish is a chill little town with laid back people and its just down the road from the park.
It's your trip have fun and good luck.
Later summer is a no go. I've already got the time off, and in my line of work, with my seniority, I have to take summer time vacations whenever I can get them. June 2-9 is our time to go. I'll see what they guys want to do.
Well, guys.. After everyone decided to back out of the trip (it is just me and my good friend now), we have looked at changing our destination from the Black Hills to somewhere warm and sunny. Being that between now and Thursday, we are supposed to receive another 6+ inches of snow, I am tired of being cold.
My buddy stated that he does not want to do a 30 hour ride to somewhere like the Florida Keys or San Diego.. So I started looking at other destinations, and Myrtle Beach crossed my mind. This would give us an opportunity (Remember we are in the Minneapolis area) to ride through several spots (Nashville, the Smokey Mountains, etc.). I thought that this may be a good destination (at about 20-21 hours/1380 miles) for a 7-day ride. Other thoughts were South Padre Island, at approximately 22-23 hours/1550 miles. Has anyone been to these destinations before?
Let me know your experiences if you have. We are still scheduled to leave June 2nd, and return on June 9th. The goal is to camp only, and avoid hotels.
I hear ya man. We were just talking about this last night.... as the weather ba***d said "more snow"
We will be lucky to get the roads clear by your Vacay at this rate.
Yes, I am definitely not looking forward to this storm. They are saying that our totals will be in the 6-10" range. At this rate, the ice won't even be off of the lakes for opening fishing in 2.5 weeks. Up until last week, we were still making ice. People will still driving their trucks out on the ice to fish in most of northern MN.
Mikey: The Keys are probably out of the question. Like I mentioned, my friend does not want to do a 30 hour ride (not including the stops for gas). In 7 days, a trip like the keys would be about 4000 miles. It is achievable, but I don't think we will get to see much. We would like to go somewhere that we could spend a day and a half riding to, hang out for a couple days, and start making our way back and stop in various places along the way. I have June 2-11th off of work, and he has the 1-9th. I'm trying to get the 1st off so that we can leave that Saturday and have an extra day. We will see what happens. I have been told South Padre Island is a pretty good hot spot for tourism (and some good viewing opportunities).. And being that I have family in TX that I have not seen in 15 years, maybe it would give a chance to see them as well.
