Question Hollow Bolts...

Hey forum, another mod I am doing is moving my front turn signals from the bars to the upper fork tins on my 06 Fatboy. I seen the thread a while back but cannot find it whatsoever. I want to put the signal wires through a hollow bolt and thread it into one of the bolts on the upper tins with the same stock 5/16-24 threads. And just plug the hole from where the wires previously came out of. I've seen other Fatboys with the turn signals moved to the fork tins but don't like the wires showing. Anyone have any advice or input on this...or seen this setup with no wires showing? If so, where to get the threaded bolts from...Thanks...

A hollow 5/16 bolt would not have much clearance inside to retain some amount of strength. If I remember the mod description, they were using a piece of 5/16- 24 threaded rod cut to length. I've never seen it in a hollow form although you might find it notched for the same sort of application. You might check the McMaster-Carr catalog.

Threaded pipe that holds a lamp socket to the base. Household lamp. Any good hardware store should have them, and usually ce with washers and nuts. I've made some hollow bolts on the lathe several times. Steve

I just got some brass 5/16 -18 all thread for my drag specialties mirrors that have the turn signal in the stem and the wires will run through the bolt. I had cut one of the originals for another bike and my new one needs longer. The brass is much easier to drill out. Those stock wires are kinda fat and don't think they would fit as mentioned but you could use an LED board with much thinner wires to accomplish what you are looking to do.

5/16" bolt will have enough strength to hold the turn signals up just fine.. I did this to my sportster a few years ago.. if you have a lathe, or access to one it makes it a butt ton easier..otherwise its going to be a pain to try to drill out a bolt by hand. like Deadanimal said, try to get some brass bolts, they'll do the job just fine.

i double checked against my earlier post. the treaded tube i mentioned is 3/8" fine thread. not 5/16". added a few pics so you get the idea. i dont know if going up in size is an option. drilled bolt will be a a tight fit, since the ft. sigs are 2 wire plus ground. you can probably get 2 wires through and use the mount as ground. largest i would drill is 3/16". steve

This is what you are looking for
http://www.jpcycles.com/motorcycle-search/hollow-bolts

I read the thread that was referenced by F22 Junky and even sent the guy who started it a private message. He wasn't too helpful...he directed me to a website that only sells to dealers and wasn't at all forthcoming with info about how he went about doing the mod.

It was painfully obvious that he was extremely proud of his mod and was in no way eager to share. So i Goog'd hollow bolts and came up with the link that I have shared.
