I use this one all the time works great. Punch a hole in the filter with the nail first & let it drain down the slide. Then take the filter off when most of the oil is in your pan. The rest will just feed down the funnel when the filter is removed.

an empty cigarette carton works well to catch that oil! open it up and the folds help hold the spilled oil.

Like what was stated before SG is caustic to aluminum. If washed off immediately it should be fine but id pass. I used a product called Oil Eater. Its caustic but safer than SG.

I just pee off any oil that spills out. It marks my spot and keeps ******** from touching my bike when I'm not around

Sandwich bag, non zip-lock style after breaking the filter loose.

Slide a cut up 2 liter pop bottle under the filter. Use an awl to punch two holes in the end of the filter, one at the top and one at the bottom. Go have a cold beer or two. Come back and remove the now empty filter.

I think it was intentionally designed that way for a couple of reasons, one of which soft 02 has stated. Another is to aid in our being able to ride more by lessening the amount of time we have to spend washing and cleaning our bikes. The area around the oil filter can be difficult to get to with the Regulator and CPS plug with it's associated wires being in such close proximity.

Having the oil around that area not only acts as a rust inhibitor, it also facilitates bugs just sliding off when they hit that area, thereby saving us the time consuming task of trying to remove all the dried bug guts in a difficult to reach spot.

Makes sense to me anyway.
