I have gotten it in my mind that I want a spring solo seat on my Fat Boy. I want the best setup there is. And in rare form, I am not basing any of this call on what it costs. I simply want the best setup I can get. Right now my research leads me to either the Mother Road Customs seats, with the Panhead style seat, or the fatctory MOCO mount from a X-Bones, with a tractor style seat. Though I actually like the LaRosa "seats", too many people biotch about their seat mounts. And they don"t cover up any of the underseat electronics. So this is some of what I am looking at but need advice on what the abosulte BEST spring solo seat setup really is. Heres where I am at now:
bikerlaw, about 6 months ago I sold two X-Bones seats complete with all hardware included for $250.00 each set up. They went fast! Reason for selling seats, family members said they were uncomfortable!
I dont have one but when I was looking into it awhile back some guys said the MRC set up was a good kit. It better be for the money. I like the leather ECM cover.
On some of the setups I saw guys used black vinyl to stretch over the batt and stuff with snaps that were screwed into the frame. It was old school cool.
Then there was the RSD kit that involved a new fender and struts (if I remember correctly) but I think it required an ECM relocation. I think its discontinued anyway but it was a good looking kit.
As for the HD batt cover on the Xbones it looks like it has a grain finish and is molded in color? If that is the case I would sand it down smooth and have it painted to match the color and gloss level of the frame. Seems like it might blend better like that.
It appears that the HD seat would set you up a bit higher than the other. That would be a deal-breaker for me...
The MRC also looks like a cleaner setup.
Well there's no question I want a comfy seat. The MRC seat does look fairly comfy, but I may just buy the kit and shop around for the actual seat later. As mentioned, I might go for a tractor style seat. Motown, I agree that painting the cover would look much nicer, but if I have to go threw the time and expense, I might as well get the powder coated MRC setup, agreed??? The look I desperately want to avoid is the super thin seat look. I want a somewhat beefy looking suspended seat, as my bike is far from a stripped down bobber, but not as obese as the factory unit.
