Buy the softail and put your own springer front end on it.

You might find the power of an 88 Evo lacking depending what your used to. They are indestructable though.

I don't really know what is available in different models, years and sizes but I could not disagree more with the statement about the ride quality not being good. I have owned a lot of bikes between 76 and now and I can think of none that I think rode better than the springers I own now. They definitely have a different feel to them but when they are set up right they handle great. The biggest thing I love about them is no front end dive when braking.

I rode the chit out of my 97 springer with the 88 EVO but I like it much better now that I have a 113 in it with a 6 speed....

I know you meant the 80ci, and yeah, I've considered the lack of power. If I go with an EVO some motor work may be in order. My Lowrider is a 96ci and sometimes I wish it a little more juice....but it's really not so bad.

I have no concerns about a springer front end. I realize it'll be a different ride but I don't think I'll be unhappy with it.

Right now, it's just a matter of finding the right bike, for the right price. Whether it's an 80, 88, or 96.
