I ordered some Cycle Shack Tapered Slip-on mufflers off of Amazon for my 2012 Heritage Softail. I was initially worried that they would be too loud judging from the reviews floating around the internet. Well let me say, these pipes sound awesome. They give your Harley the quintessential true Harley sound. You will have no problem passing a police officer as long as you ride politely. But, give her some serious throttle and these things roar like lions. At idle, the bike sounds fantastic, not obnoxiously loud, but in no way wimpy either. I really like that the tapered mufflers look exactly like stock. No one would even think you've modified the exhaust until you start her up.
I installed these mufflers myself in about two hours. The install was fairly straight forward even with my limited mechanical ability. I did not need to remap the fuel injection system as my bike was completely stock. There is the slightest bit of popping on decel but it is really very minor and is nothing to be too concerned about and the bike is running like a champ. Even so, I might get a torque wrench and torque them up to spec to see if that takes care of it.
I must admit I'm surprised at the great value, quality, and how good these mufflers sound. The bike literally sounds fantastic. They sound as good if not better than mufflers or systems that are substantially more expensive. I highly recommend these mufflers to any Harley enthusiast and give them two thumbs up. Also, after the install, I cleaned up the mufflers with some Windex and a cloth and the chrome shines very nicely.
So there's my experience with Cycle Shack just in case any one has spent the winter like I did, trying to figure out which pipes to get.
I checked out some reviews also and you're right. Seems most say they're either loud or too loud. I like the idea of them looking stock and the steel core without baffle wrapping material to burn out.
Got a set coming for the Heritage. The stock mufflers are just too quiet. I had a set of the tapered's on a previous bike and thought they sounded pretty good and the tapered's give a somewhat stock appearance to.
I've used tapered Cycle Shack mufflers and M Pipes for years. They have been around since 1971. Always thought they sounded great and never had any issues with chrome etc. Some folks assume because they are less expensive they are inferior quality, that is NOT the case.
