Default Not so loud exhaust.

I see a lots of posts where people want the loudest exhaust possible. I don't want that. 44 years of helicopters and my hearing is shot and want to preserve what's left of it. Getting a new fatboy this week, talked to fuel moto about stage 1 stuff, and planning the V&H 3" slash tip. They have 2 other type baffles, loud and quiet. I had planned the SE street performance until I found out they have cats in them so the V&H is how I am going. Compared to the older non cat SE mufflers, how is the V&H in the "normal" configuration and how is the quiet version. I always wear ear plugs but want to be able to hear the engine, kind of nice when determining when to shift.

Have the SE street performance on my FLHTK and they got a little bit louder after some miles, but a nice tone and volume.

Stage 1 is as far as I am going. NOT going inside the engine.

Not answering your particular questions, but in general, the V&H quiet baffles produce a deeper sound, but not necessarily more quiet. This has been my experience from some Longshots and some slip-ons.

Presumably changing out the baffles is an easy job but don't want to spend the extra money if not necessary. I am going to order the components next week and will address the questions to fuel moto also. But user input is always, well usually, the best.

See this thread and, in particular, post #8.

You can still find pre-cat SE's on ebay but they tend to go quick.

I put a V&H slip-on on a Switchback I had last year, since the stock exhaust was so quiet I couldn't even hear it at cruising speeds.
The V&H was just right, not too quiet, not too loud, with a nice sound.
I picked those over the SE slip-ons since the SE's weren't much louder than stock IMO...

I thought most V&H pipes cam with 3 different kinds of baffles...quiet, competition and mid range. I wish they had pipes you hear in person and not online, which is hardly the same.

The V&H slip ons are loud. The q baffles tone down the sharpness but not so much the decibels. I recently took off my V&H Big Shots and reverted to the stock headers and SE slip ons. I am a happy camper. Nice deep exhaust note but can hear the engine -- and myself think. Plus it is neighborhood friendly. I found the louder pipes punishing, especially on longer highway rides.

Another option would be Rush 1.75s. Louder than the SEs but a bit less dBs than the V&H and to my ears a more pleasing tone. Cobras are another option. Both have packed baffles.

Khrome werks at http://www.khromewerks.com/

The emails I got from Vance and Hines put their DB level around 96 even with the quiet baffels. Khrome werks claims about 92 DB.

They look exactly like the stock, are well made and fit perfectly. They are free flowing and have a nice deep rumble to them. They really are louder than stock yet noticeably more quiet than any Vance and Hines I have heard.

Khrome Werks, Fuel Moto Air Cleaner and Power Vision made a big difference in performance and I have a much cooler running engine.

Not to throw a monkey wrench in here, have you heard of these pipes-
http://www.americancustom.com/
These are the ones I finally ended my search with. They have several different baffles you can change out. I actually bought an extra set and took a drill and added 2 more rows of holes.Made the street friendly ones where I wanted the sound going down the highway
