I doesn't have to be one or the other. I ride to work most every day on my bike. I have nice 30 mile runs I do around town on weekends. (Never go to a bar, but food is nice.)
I take it to games. Took it to jury duty. Take it out at 6 a.m. for a quick sunset run to the beach. Sit and write, and ride back. Take it anywhere, really.
And sometimes I do the over 100 mile round trip thing to go see relatives. No 500 mile trips for me yet, but I'm sure I've put plenty of miles on my bike by riding it most every day. And I'll get around to the long haul when it makes sense.

I occasionally bar hop to a place about 175 miles from my front door, but those are overnight trips as I don't ride home til the next day, after lunch.
I ride everyday it's not raining, or I need to pick up something with my truck. Don't barhop. At 57 I don't miss the bar scene.
Of course in WI we only get 6-8 months to ride.
I had my share of alcohol problems before finally giving it up. I'm not into bar hopping anymore, but fortunately there are plenty of guys in my RG who feel the same way.
I ride my bike as a daily when the weather permits and even if its drizzling. If it requires me going local to local i use it If it involves me doing a 200+ ride i use it.
