I am the proud owner of a new Softail Deluxe and I am looking at on board storage options.
I love the lines of my bike and I am thinking of not adding saddle bags at this time.
For normal riding I should be able to get by with a fork bag and a roll bag for the back fender rack (for rain suit, heaver gloves, jacket).
Anyone else done this and how did it work out?
Anyone have use a roll bag (Saddleman) or similar on your rack?
Like you, I started out not wanting to add bags. For my needs I quickly discovered that if I stopped at a store and bought something I'd have to carry it myself and that wasn't going to work. I ended up buying the nostalgia bags specifically because they weren't too large and you could still see the softail "line" while having the benefit of having a place to put stuff. I've been pleased with mine. Only problem I have with them is a little more work cleaning the white walls. Good luck with that beautiful ride.
Keep the slim profile of the bike without saddle bags. The Bikers Friend can sit on either side of the sissy bar or even without a sissy bar. Plenty of storage. Quick to remove and can act as a travel bag and mounted behind the rider gives you great back support.
if you put bags you will never take them off.makes life so easy.when i first started i swore no bags and no shiled that didnt last long at all its all about comfort
I have a stripped down heritage softail classic with no saddlebags (this is how I got mine pre-owned) To maintain the look of no bags while still being able to carry essentials like you mentioned above plus tools, I opted for a 5in width leatherworks swing arm bag and a teardrop tool box. The swingarm bag is surprisingly roomy and now I have a dedicated area just for tools.

I was the same way, swore no bags on my deluxe. broke down and installed them saturday morning, rode the last two days with them. I will NEVER get rid of them, frigging different experience all together riding and actually being able to store things!
I have never said that I won't being adding bags but have made it a year w/o bags. I have a windshield on my bike and it has been very helpful. When not wearign my jacket I roll it up and place it behind the windshield. Since I take my iPad to work daily I place it in a small bag that I strap on the rear rack or slide it behind the windshield and sets above the headlight. As far as picking up stuff up at the store I have a bungee I leave it on the bike that I can strap on the rack.
