Starting to put together a listing of things I need for my 1,000 mile maintenance and based on the research in the General Chat forum, most people are running Redline.
I also noticed that in my owners manual it says the Softails only need 32oz for Primary Chaincase oil which is perfect since the kit comes with 32oz (1 quart), although some HD's need 38oz according to their website.
Does anyone have any thoughts before I pull the trigger or know of any place to get it cheaper then Racer Parts Wholesale
RPW is the cheapest I've ever found. 32oz should be fine in the primary. Get a good lift (if you don't already have one) a set of hex sockets, service manual, gaskets and some cold beers
If you read the topics in the sub forum, Oil and Oil Related Topics, it contains a running poll from thousands of riders on topics from the different oil used in each hole to what filter most people use. It is probably more concise than a few threads in the General HD Chat forum.
To date, the following is most commonly used by riders:
Crankcase oil Amsoil (27.45%), Mobil 1 (27.39%), Syn 3 (18.15%)
Primary oil Amsoil (23.42%), Mobil 1 (21.98%), Syn 3 (15.30%)
Filter wrench, Torx sockets or drivers, Allen sockets and wrenches, fluid draining items, such as the filter drain funnel and "pig" flexible drain funnel. The pig will be handy when you do the trans. Patience.
Just so you know, I used to run redline shockproof in my tranny...then my mechanic told me it was really for racing...he also noted that it is not certified...I checked my next full bottle in the garage and he was right...IT HAS NO CERTIFICATIONS AND DOES NOT SAY IT WILL NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY...I have a qt in my garage if anyone wants it cheap...Look at a bottle before you by it...I run amsoil 75-90 severe gear lube in the tranny.
